Calculations for Determining How Much Mulch or Soil You Need
Step 1 - Measure the square footage of your flower bed (Length X Width)
Step 2 - Decide how deep you want the material.
Our recommendations:
Mulch - 3-4 inches
Planting Mix 6-8 inches for raised beds
Step 3 - Divide the square footage of the planting bed by the table that correlates to the depth of the bed that you desire.
By: 1" = 324s 2" = 162sf 3" = 108sf 4" = 81sf 6" = 54sf 8" = 40sf 12" = 27sf
Example: I have a flower bed that is 8 feet wide and 27 feet long. This means I have an area that is 216 square feet. (8x27=216) I want to spread 3" of mulch, so I divide 216 by the chart above (216 / 108 = 2) so I need 2 cubic yards to cover the area with 3" of mulch.
Another way to determine the coverage of a cubic yards is:
Amount Depth Coverage
1 cubic yard 2" 162 sf (10' x 16.2')
1 cubic yard 3" 108 sf (10' x 10.8')
1 cubic yard 4" 81 sf (10' x 8.1')
1 cubic yard 6" 54 sf (10' x 5.4')
1 cubic yard 12" 27 sf (1' x 27')
